GERMANTOWN, Maryland — The 5th Annual South Asian Boishakhi Celebration, a cultural and heritage festival bringing together South Asian communities, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, Maryland.

Organized by the Bangladesh American Council, Inc. (BAC), in association with Deshi Shad Inc., the event will celebrate the traditions, cultural diversity and shared heritage of Bangladeshis, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Nepalese and Bhutanese communities in the United States.

According to the event poster, the festival will run from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Seneca Valley High School, located at 19401 Crystal Rock Drive, Germantown, Maryland 20874.

Celebrating South Asian Culture and Heritage

The festival, promoted as a joint Boishakhi celebration, aims to create a welcoming space for South Asian communities to celebrate their cultural identities and strengthen relationships across national and ethnic backgrounds.

Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar, holds special significance for Bengalis around the world. The Bengali New Year, known as Pahela Baishakh, is traditionally marked by colourful festivities, traditional music, dance, food and cultural gatherings. Similar New Year traditions and seasonal celebrations across South Asia reflect the region's rich cultural heritage.

The annual celebration seeks to bring these traditions together through a shared cultural experience, offering attendees an opportunity to reconnect with their roots while introducing younger generations and the wider American community to South Asian customs and values.

A Gathering of Six South Asian Communities

A key feature of the event is its emphasis on unity among six South Asian communities: Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Nepalese and Bhutanese.

By bringing these communities together under one celebration, the festival highlights the common cultural connections that unite people across national boundaries. It also provides an opportunity to appreciate the distinct traditions, cuisines and artistic expressions that contribute to South Asia's cultural diversity.

Such community festivals play an important role in preserving cultural traditions among immigrant communities while promoting mutual understanding and inclusion in American society.

Food, Cultural Activities and Community Participation

The event's promotional materials highlight the cultural and culinary dimensions of the celebration. Deshi Shad Inc. has announced that its cold products will be available at the exhibition, adding a food-related attraction to the festivities.

Traditional South Asian food, cultural displays and opportunities for community interaction are often central to Boishakhi celebrations, allowing visitors to experience the region's diverse culinary traditions and festive atmosphere.

The festival is expected to attract families, community members and cultural enthusiasts interested in celebrating South Asian heritage. Specific entertainment schedules and additional programme details should be confirmed with the organizers.

Strengthening Community Bonds

Beyond the festivities, the 5th Annual South Asian Boishakhi Celebration represents an opportunity to strengthen community relationships and promote cultural exchange.

For South Asian Americans, cultural gatherings provide an important connection to their ancestral traditions, languages and customs. They also help younger generations understand and appreciate their heritage while encouraging people from different backgrounds to participate in shared cultural experiences.

Through its joint celebration format, the event seeks to foster a spirit of friendship, cooperation and togetherness among the participating communities.
