A program titled "Inauguration of the Smart National Identity Card Distribution Program and Motivating Expatriates to Vote" was organized by the Bangladesh Consulate General in Toronto, Canada. Visiting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh, AMM Nasir Uddin, was present as the chief guest.
At the event, he inaugurated the smart card distribution program for the diaspora and urged them to participate in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
More than a hundred expatriate Bangladeshis participated in the meeting, moderated by Consul General Md. Faruk Hossain. Businessmen, doctors, engineers, educators, journalists, students, and other professionals from various fields were present.
In his speech, the Chief Election Commissioner outlined the overall preparations for the elections in Bangladesh. He also discussed in detail how Bangladeshis living abroad will register to vote and participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
He said that expatriates holding national identity cards will have the opportunity to vote by post. For this, he said, work is already underway to develop an app called 'Postal Ballot BD'.
During the open discussion and question-and-answer session, expatriates raised questions about NID services and voting rights. The CEC listened attentively to everyone's statements and responded.
The expatriates thanked the Chief Election Commissioner for visiting Canada and exchanging views with them, and also expressed gratitude to the consulate authorities for taking such an initiative.
At the end of the meeting, Consul General Md. Faruk Hossain thanked everyone and reiterated the consulate's assurance of full cooperation in providing NID and other consular services.
