International Mother Language Day celebrated with due dignity in Lisbon

The International Mother Language Day was celebrated with due dignity in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Since Friday night, expatriate Bangladeshis of various classes and professions and children and teenagers of the new generation have flocked to the Permanent Shaheed Minar in Lisbon to pay tribute to the language martyrs.

On the occasion, a solemn and meaningful event was organized by the Bangladesh Embassy in Lisbon, with the spontaneous participation of Bangladeshis living abroad.

In the early hours of February 21 at 12:01 am, First Secretary of the Embassy Laila Muntazir Dina and Head of the Embassy SM Golam Sarwar laid wreaths at the Permanent Shaheed Minar in Lisbon in memory of the language martyrs. Later, other officials and employees of the Embassy and leaders of various political, social and cultural organizations of the Bangladeshi community living in Portugal paid tribute to the language martyrs by placing flowers at the Shaheed Minar.

At this time, the expatriate Bangladeshis present observed a minute of silence as a mark of deep respect for the sacrifices of the martyrs of the language movement.

After placing the wreath, the head of the embassy, ​​SM Golam Sarwar, said that the 1952 language movement was not only a struggle for the rights of the Bengali nation; it is a unique example of protecting the dignity of the mother tongue worldwide. As a result of the international recognition of that movement, February 21 is celebrated today as International Mother Language Day around the world.
