The Spanish government has decided to legalize more than half a million irregular migrants, including Bangladeshis, living in Spain. If implemented, this initiative could bring a big change in the lives of thousands of Bangladeshis living in this European country.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced after reaching an agreement with the left-wing political party Podemos on Monday local time. A royal decree, or special executive order, is scheduled to be issued on Tuesday.
The government announcement said that foreign nationals who have been living in Spain before December 31, 2025, and can show proof of continuous residence for at least five months, will be granted accelerated legal residence. Under this process, ongoing expulsion or deportation proceedings will be temporarily suspended.
Under the new decision, applicants will be granted a one-year renewable temporary residence permit. At the same time, they will be allowed to work legally, have access to government healthcare, and be registered with the social security system.
There are currently several hundred thousand irregular migrants living in the country. This new initiative will enable bringing a large portion of them into the legal framework, which is expected to have a positive impact on the labor market and the economy.
