Bangladeshi-origin Dolly Begum has been nominated as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada. The country's ruling political party has nominated her for the Scarborough Southwest riding of Toronto, Canada.
This seat, known as a long-time Liberal stronghold, became vacant after the departure of former minister Bill Blair.
The Liberal Party of Canada officially announced on Tuesday morning, Canadian local time, that Dolly Begum will contest the upcoming federal by-election in the Scarborough Southwest riding, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Dolly Begum, the first Bangladeshi-origin MPP elected to the Canadian legislature, has been serving as the provincial MPP for Scarborough Southwest since 2018.
Dolly Begum was not only a legislator in Queen's Park, but also established herself as the Deputy Leader of the Ontario NDP and a strong voice in the opposition. She won three consecutive seats by huge margins, winning the hearts of the people.
