The National Identity Card (NID) service has been launched at the Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo, Japan.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed officially inaugurated the service at the embassy's hall on Friday.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo announced this information in a press release.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the service program, Akhtar Ahmed said, "Many expatriate Bangladeshis in Japan do not have national identity cards. Due to this, they face problems in accessing various services in the country. From now on, expatriates in Japan will be able to access all NID-related services through the embassy."
He also said that arrangements are being made so that expatriates can vote by mail (through postal ballot) in the next election.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Md. Daud Ali said that after a long-standing demand, expatriate Bangladeshis will benefit greatly from the introduction of NID services in Japan.
Election Commission officials, representatives of the Bangladeshi diaspora community in Japan, and embassy officials and employees were present at the event.
The embassy said that to apply for a national identity card, one must fill out the form online at services.nidw.gov.bd. Then, one must go to the embassy and submit biometric information and necessary documents.
