A Bangladeshi businessman named Maruf Bepari has allegedly been shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa.

The murder occurred at his own business establishment in the Julutemba area around 10 pm on Wednesday.

Local expatriate Bangladeshi businessmen claim that he was killed over a dispute over extortion in the name of security.

The deceased, Maruf Bepari, was a resident of West Sidya village, ward number 4, Sidya union, Damudya upazila, Shariatpur. After the news of his death reached the country, mourning is underway among his family and relatives.

Expatriate Bangladeshi businessmen familiar with Maruf say he had been doing business in the Zulutemba area of South Africa for more than 10 years. It is alleged that some local individuals used to demand 500 to 1,500 South African rand from him in the name of security for running the business.

Local expatriate Bangladeshi businessmen claim that Maruf was shot dead because of a dispute with them over increasing the amount of bribes.

However, there has been no official statement from South African law enforcement on the motive for the killing, and it has not been confirmed whether anyone has been arrested in the incident.

The deceased's relative, Kamruzzaman Bepari, said, "My uncle Maruf Bepari had to give his life in a foreign land for ransom. Doesn't the embassy there see this?

The family members are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Now their only request is that the government take immediate steps to bring Maruf's body back to the country."

The relatives have sought the cooperation of the Bangladesh government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Embassy in South Africa to quickly repatriate Maruf's body. The grieving family of West Sidya village in Damudya is spending their days waiting for the body of their loved one to return home.
