The Bangladesh Day Parade, a major event for expatriate Bangladeshis in New York, will be held on May 17 (Sunday). The parade is being organized with the participation of more than a hundred organizations with the aim of further highlighting the position of the Bangladeshi community.
The parade committee announced this information at a press conference held at the Sanai Party Center in Jackson Heights on the evening of May 2.
Organizers said the parade will take place from 69th Street to 87th Street via 37th Avenue. It will feature floats decorated with various elements of Bengali culture, as well as dance and song performances by popular artists.
Regarding security, it was reported that more than a thousand Bangladeshi-American officers working in the New York Police Department will ensure order and security of the parade.
Parade Committee Member-Secretary Fahad Solaiman moderated the program. In his opening speech, Attorney Moin Chowdhury said that 120 organizations have already registered to participate with banners and festoons and many more are waiting. He hopes that this year's event will become a grand and historic event for the expatriates.
Convener Gias Ahmed said that elected representatives can also participate in the parade. Grand Marshal M Aziz, Parade Coordinator Abdus Sobhan, Event Coordinator Rocky, Faisal Aziz and various level organizers and advisors were also present at the event.
Organizers said that although more than 300,000 Bangladeshis live in New York, permission to organize a large-scale parade in Manhattan has not been obtained so far. For this reason, maximum preparations are being made to make this event successful and memorable in Jackson Heights.
