Three brave police officers, one of whom is Bangladeshi, saved a 16-year-old girl who was about to commit suicide by jumping into the Harlem River in Manhattan, New York City, on the afternoon of November 11.
Nearly nine years ago, Noakhali police officer Rajub Bhowmik had already earned praise for saving the life of a 49-year-old man who was attempting to commit suicide by jumping into the Hudson River near Battery Park in downtown Manhattan. This time, one of the three brave officers is Shuaibul Amin (27), a son of Faridpur. The other two are Indian Ankit Gupta (27) and Hispanic Wilmer Guerrero (32).
The New York Daily News reported on November 13, under the headline 'Cops save suicidal girl, 16, who jumped into freezing Harlem River', that a patrol police team saw the young woman climbing up the cornice of a bridge over the Harlem River. No one would normally be safe there. So three officers spontaneously approached her. Shuaibul Amin tried to grab her hand after begging her to come down, but was unsuccessful.
The young woman then jumped into the freezing water of the river and screamed. She herself stated that she did not know how to swim. Seeing her drowning in the deep water 20-30 feet from the riverbank, Wilmer Guerrero quickly took off his bulletproof vest and revolver belt, jumped in, and swam to rescue the young woman.
