Street named after Bangladeshi-American police officer in New York

A street in the Bronx, New York City, USA, has been renamed in memory of Bangladeshi-American police officer Detective First Grade Didarul Islam.

A plaque, 'Detective First Grade Didarul Islam Way', was unveiled on the road in front of the house where he lived in a modest ceremony on Saturday (July 18). Didarul Islam's wife, children, father and people from different walks of life from the Bangladeshi community were present at the ceremony.

The road was named in recognition of the professional dedication and sacrifice of this Bangladeshi police officer who sacrificed his life while performing his duty to protect the security of the city.

"New York City commemorates Didarul Islam's heroism and sacrifice by placing a plaque in his name on the street where he lived," said New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a statement at the event. "When a street is named after an individual, that person's life and contributions become part of the city's history."

On July 28, four people were killed in a shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan by gunman Shane Tamura. Didarul Islam, who was working in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was also shot and killed by the gunman as he tried to stop the attack. 

It is worth noting that two streets in New York City have been named in memory of three other Bangladeshis before. One is 'Shakila-Nural Islam Mia' Street in the Berridge area of ​​Brooklyn and the other is 'Mizanur Rahman Way' in Ozone Park. These streets were named in memory of Shakila and Nural Islam Mia, a couple killed in the 9/11 attacks, and photojournalist Mizanur Rahman, who was killed in an attack by a miscreant.
