A Bangladeshi national was killed by terrorists in South Africa.

Md. Jamal Mia (40), an expatriate businessman from Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur, was shot dead by terrorists in South Africa. The incident took place around 11:30 pm last Wednesday.

The deceased Jamal Mia is the son of Md. Chidu Mia Bepari of Sipaikandi village in Fatehpur Purba Union of the upazila. He is the father of three children. Among his children, the eldest son Bayezid is 8 years old, the daughter Cynthia is 3 years old and the younger daughter Samira Akter is 2 years old.

Locals said that Jamal went to South Africa about three years ago in search of a livelihood. There, he set up a variety shop on his own initiative. He was running the business with one employee in the shop.

Jamal was killed on the spot when a group of armed men attacked his shop on Wednesday night and opened fire. An employee in the shop was also shot. The injured employee is being treated at a local hospital.

Jamal's father, Chidu Mia Bepari, said, "My little grandchildren became orphans at a young age. I didn't even get a chance to touch my son's body. As a father, what could be more painful than this?"

He sought the government's cooperation to quickly bring his son's body back to his village and arrange for his burial. For this, he sought the assistance of the Wage Earners' Welfare Board, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and other relevant authorities.

Local UP member Khokon Mia said that the Matlab North Upazila Executive Officer has been informed about Jamal's death.

Upazila Executive Officer Mahmuda Kulsum Moni said, "I came to know about the matter through the UP member. I immediately contacted the Bangladesh Embassy in South Africa. The embassy will take necessary action once it receives the legal documents of the deceased Jamal Miah. If any cooperation is required from our side, that will also be done."
