Jannatul Tumpa directed a stage play for the first time. He directed the play 'Amanush', written by renowned playwright Mamunur Rashid and produced by Shuchona Theater.
On June 14, two performances of the play were held at 9 Baird Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, at 3:30 PM and 6:45 PM local time.
The play was staged on the occasion of the 21st annual edition of the South Asian Theatre Festival. The festival is organized by EPIC (Empowering People Inspiring Community) and co-organized by Collab Arts. The poster of the play was conceptualized and designed by Rana Masud and Rahi Chowdhury.
Regarding directing a stage play for the first time, Jannatul Tumpa said, "I have been involved in drama production for almost two decades. As a result, I have had the experience of seeing and understanding drama production from a very close perspective. However, although I did not intend to direct, I directed the play "Amanush" mainly at the request of renowned playwright Mamunur Rashid. If I get everyone's support, I intend to become a regular in directing dramas in the future as well."
It is worth noting that the play "Amanush" centers around an idealistic teacher who dreams of building a beautiful, educated and humane society. But in the face of corruption, irregularities and social pressure around him, that dream becomes impossible to realize. Gradually breaking down due to depression and mental stress, this man loses his mental balance and at one point leans towards extreme decisions.
Meanwhile, his wife tries to convince him that the real power of life is not in breaking dreams, but in holding on to them. This intense reflection on human values, social degradation, and the mental struggle of the individual forces the audience to think deeply, are we really human, or are we gradually becoming "subhuman" under the pressure of society?
