The two-day largest theatre festival in North America was held in Toronto, Canada. Six theatre groups participated in the festival. A total of seven plays were staged, including Rabindranath Tagore's dance drama Chandalika.
The participating groups were Kristi and Dhaka Drama from New York, USA; Shukru Natak from Windsor; Saugandhikam Dance Academy from Toronto; Mac Theatre; and the organizing body, Natyasangh Canada.
Natyasangha Canada staged their socio-political drama, Gandhagokul, and social satire-based drama, Ramgaruder Chhana, on both days and received a huge response from the audience. After the performance of the dance drama Chandalika, the entire hall gave a standing ovation. Kristir's The Game and Shaitan in Dhaka Drama Crisis also caught the attention of the audience.
With a large number of spectators present, this day-long drama program truly transformed into a drama festival. Despite such a huge event, the stage management of the theatre association and Canada was remarkable. Each play was performed on stage as per the announced time.
Five plays were staged consecutively on the first day. Four plays were staged on the second day. Natyasangha, Canada, has added a new dimension to the Bengali theatre movement in Canada in its long six-year journey. Each quality production has created interest in Bengali stage plays among the audience, inspiring them to watch the next production.
The organizers said that this event is to continue the flow of Bengali culture abroad and to highlight our culture among the new generation. Our journey will continue in the future as well.
