Eliza becomes Australia's first Bangladeshi-origin female deputy mayor

Bangladeshi-origin Eliza Rahman has made history by being elected deputy mayor of a local council in Australia. 

She was elected deputy mayor by councillors at a general meeting of Camden Council in south-west Sydney, one of the country's fastest-growing regions, the Australian High Commission in Dhaka said in a congratulatory message on Thursday.

At the same meeting, Councillor Vince Ferreri was elected mayor. With this election, Eliza Rahman created a milestone by becoming the second person of Bangladeshi origin and the first Bangladeshi woman to hold the position of deputy mayor in the Australian local government system.

Previously, Masud Khalil became the first Bangladeshi to be elected deputy mayor of nearby Campbelltown City in September 2023.

In response to being elected Deputy Mayor, Eliza Rahman said, "It is a great pleasure to serve in this position. I look forward to continuing to serve this wonderful community in my new position."

Eliza Rahman's success has been greeted with congratulations and best wishes from the Bangladeshi community living in Australia and from various quarters.
