Canada is a country of multiculturalism. Along with people from different countries, more than one lakh expatriate Bengalis are permanently residing here. When the holy month of Ramadan arrives, a beautiful blend of religious customs, traditions and compassion of Bengalis with Muslims from different countries is seen. This is manifested through the iftar arrangements of the expatriates.
Despite living abroad, Bengali Muslims have not forgotten their religious customs. Even though they are far away from their relatives in the country, they gather with their relatives in the diaspora to break their fast. On holidays, after breaking the fast, Bengali food and chats continue until midnight.
On the occasion of Ramadan, grocery stores have various Iftar items arranged at their entrances. Juice, chickpeas, gram flour, and other foods from different countries are being sold as Iftar items. Whether it's a busy day or a holiday, expatriate Bengalis are always coming with their families to buy Iftar items.
The shelves of grocery stores owned by expatriate Bengalis are filled with Bangladeshi products. It looks like a market in Bangladesh. Restaurants also have various iftar arrangements. Among them, you can see Bangladeshi-style Shahi Halim, Shahi Jilapi, Beguni, Piyaju, Alu Chop, Chickpeas, various types of fruits and sherbet.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life in exile, when Bengalis meet each other after Iftar and Tarawih prayers, the entire atmosphere changes. In Bangladeshi-dominated areas, these mosque-centered gatherings become festive. It truly feels like a piece of Bangladesh in the heart of Canada.
