Nishat Jannat, a 19-year-old Bangladeshi college student, was crushed to death by a New York City garbage truck while returning home from work. Police said that Nishat fell under the truck while crossing the street at 62nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue in the Woodside area near Jackson Heights at midnight on Sunday. She died at the scene, an emergency medical services nurse told police. The deceased's older sister, Nausheen Jannat, said that Nishat, a New York City College student, worked as a receptionist at a parking garage on Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica and wore a black uniform. When she did not return home after finishing her duty around 11 pm, she went looking for her.

Naushin said, "We reached the spot around 2 am by following the phone's location. There were police all around."

Remembering her sister, she said, "My sister was very optimistic. She would talk to everyone and tell them to trust in Allah." Nishat is survived by two younger sisters (ages 9 and 4) and an elder sister, Naushin. Nishat is the daughter of Helal Uddin, a resident of Uttar Ghargaon, Golapganj, Sylhet, and the imam of Baitul Jannah Mosque in the local Woodside. She said, "I came to New York 8 years ago with the hope of a better future. Nishat was the second of four daughters. She was studying at the City College of New York and working as a Bangladeshi. The killer fell under the truck in front of the grocery store 'Foodfare'."
