Bangladeshi taxi driver injured in New York shooting

Bangladeshi taxi driver Ruhul Amin Nasir (53) was shot in the face while trying to stop a fight between two parties after a minor collision with a car. At 4:05 am on Friday, Nasir was dropping off a passenger in his taxi on North Portland Avenue near Auburn Place and Fort Greene in Brooklyn, New York City. At that time, another car hit him from behind. A minor collision occurred. At that time, Nasir got out of the taxi to check if there was any major damage. At one point, during an argument between the driver of the car that hit him and the passenger Nasir had dropped off, Ruhul Amin Nasir was urging both parties to remain calm. At that time, a man from a neighboring house approached Nasir's taxi and fired a shot at Nasir before he could realize anything, hitting him in the right side of the face. 

The police reported this information. 

Citing witnesses, the police also said that Nasir was dropping off a passenger in his taxi there. Nasir, bleeding from the scene, was admitted to the nearby New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and underwent two surgeries, Nasir's friend Shah Alam told this correspondent on Saturday evening. 

The investigating police said that the condition of Ruhul Amin Nasir, former secretary of the 'Probasi Barisal Divisional Welfare Association', is now out of danger. 

It is worth noting that Nasir, who lives in Queens, has been driving a taxi for 16 years to support his family. His wife and children are worried after being shot by a miscreant. Shah Alam, advisor to the 'Probasi Barisal Divisional Welfare Association', told this reporter that we are keeping an eye on the hospital. However, the gunman has not been arrested even after 38 hours of the incident (as of 10 pm local time on Saturday), which has sparked anger in the community. The number of taxi drivers being shot while working is gradually increasing in New York City. Expressing anger in such a situation, Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for the 'New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers', said that taxi drivers are performing their professional duties at the risk of their lives for the sake of livelihood. Gunmen are attacking and killing without any problem. It is becoming difficult to identify them. Appropriate steps are necessary to end such a situation. 

Fernando Mateo has demanded that cameras be made mandatory in every taxi in New York so that criminals can be quickly identified in cases of attacks on drivers.

According to the federation, this is the second shooting of drivers on duty in the past two weeks. A few days ago, Pakistani driver Danish Sarwar was shot and paralyzed in Brooklyn. Two consecutive attacks once again raise the question: Are drivers who take the wheel for a living on New York's roads the most at risk?
