A Bangladeshi man named Md. Yusuf Raju (44) was killed in a shooting at a restaurant in Brooklyn, a Bangladeshi-dominated neighborhood in New York City, early Sunday morning. He was an employee of the restaurant. Another Bangladeshi man named Russell (39) was also shot in the same incident and is undergoing treatment in the hospital. He was shot in the right leg, and Raju in the head, according to the investigating police. Raju was taken to the nearby One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said the shooting occurred at the American Best Wings and Pizza restaurant at 842 Rockaway Avenue. Police are initially investigating the incident as an attack inside the restaurant. It is not yet known what caused the shooting or who was involved. However, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has launched an investigation. No arrests have been made as of 9 p.m. Sunday.
It is learned that Raju came to the United States about three years ago through the Mexican border. He paid 3 million taka to the broker for this. He has sought political asylum to live permanently in the United States. He has a wife and 3 children, brothers and sisters, and parents in the country. Yusuf Bachcha, a son of Kangshanagar in Amishapara Union of Sonaimuri Upazila of Noakhali, worked at that restaurant in New York with the intention of fulfilling his American dream. The injured Russell also lives in Noakhali.
Noakhali community leader Shahidullah Kaiser, who lives in Brooklyn, said that a customer of the restaurant was leaving without paying the bill for the food. When Raju and Russell asked them to leave the restaurant after paying the bill, at one point during the argument, the miscreant pulled out a pistol, fired several rounds, and left the scene before the police arrived. The incident has spread panic in the community.
Meanwhile, Noakhali Society leader Nazmul Haque Manik said that Raju's relatives called from Bangladesh and requested to send the body.
