A father and son from Brahmanbaria died in Turkey due to a lack of oxygen caused by a gas leak from a cylinder. Their cousin, who was with them in the same incident, is undergoing treatment in a hospital in a serious condition. The accident occurred around 5 am on Wednesday. It is learnt that the bodies of the deceased have been kept in a cold storage of a hospital in Turkey for autopsy.
The deceased are Tarek Mia (45), son of the late Yakub Mia of Medda village in Brahmanbaria municipality, and his only son Sabbir (22). In addition, a young man from Feni district also died in the incident. Sabbir's cousin Liton (26) is admitted to the hospital in a serious condition. He has been kept in the ICU.
According to family sources, they lived together in an underground room of a building in Turkey. After eating Suhoor on Tuesday night, everyone fell asleep in the morning. It is believed that at that time, gas leaked from a gas cylinder, resulting in a shortage of oxygen in the room. Tarek Mia, Sabbir and another youth died of suffocation while sleeping.
Liton was later rescued in critical condition and admitted to a local hospital, where he was transferred to the intensive care unit.
It is known that Tarek Mia migrated to Turkey about 14 years ago in search of a livelihood. He also took his son Sabbir there a year and a half ago.
Sabbir's aunt Lutfa Begum said, "We are speechless at such a sudden accident. The family is mourning. We are at a loss about bringing the body home. We can't bring the body without the government's cooperation. We ask for everyone's prayers."
