A peaceful human chain was recently held at the Danforth in Toronto, demanding the establishment of 'fair rights' for the Sylhet region. The Jalalabad Association of Toronto organized the program under the slogan 'The demand for the lives of the people of Sylhet'.

The human chain was attended by expatriate Sylhet residents and people from diverse backgrounds in Toronto. The participants protested against the long-standing discrimination against Sylhet in various fields, including infrastructure development, health and education, and demanded immediate justice.

Five-point demands of Sylhet residents:

1. The public suffering should be reduced by improving the Sylhet-Dhaka highway, railway and air services.

2. The work on the Dhaka-Sylhet six-lane highway should be completed within the next three months.

3. Effective measures should be taken to prevent the black market in train tickets and additional trains should be introduced on the Sylhet-Dhaka and Sylhet-Chittagong routes.

4. The price of air tickets should be brought to parity for the people of Sylhet.

5. Teachers should be appointed to vacant posts in all educational institutions, and the allocation for the education and health sectors in Sylhet should be increased.

The speakers said, 'These demands are not only the demands of expatriate Sylhetites, but also the demands of the lives of the people of the entire Sylhet region. Sylhet is still far behind in the infrastructure, health, and education sectors.'

The human chain decided to submit a memorandum containing the demands to the Consul General of Bangladesh in Toronto. In addition, it will be called upon to take action at the highest level of the Bangladesh government to implement the demands.
