Two Bangladeshis were killed and another was injured in a road accident while fishing in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The deceased were identified as Amir Hossain Rubel (42) of Senbagh Upazila, Noakhali, and Nasir Uddin (48) of the Bichanakandi area, Sylhet. The injured person is Mohammad Moktar Ali (35) from Mirsarai Upazila, Chittagong.
The accident occurred early Friday morning before Exit 11 of Abu Dhabi's Sila Highway, now Khalifa Bin Zayed Road.
Injured Moktar Ali said that early that morning, he and his friend Nasir Uddin were going fishing in the Hamim area, about 30 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city. When the car broke down on the way, he stopped it on the side of the road. Then he called his friend Amir Hossain Rubel for help.
Rubel reached the spot and poured water into the car's coolant and asked Moktar to start the engine. At that time, Rubel and Nasir were standing between the two cars. Just then, a six-wheeled truck lost control from behind and hit both their cars, dragging them for about half a kilometer. The impact caused all three cars to catch fire. Rubel was burnt on the spot and Nasir died from a head injury.
However, Moktar Ali survived despite suffering neck and leg injuries. He was later treated at Mafraq Specialized Hospital. The bodies of the two deceased have been kept at the Baniyas Central Morgue. The deceased, Rubel and Nasir, were involved in the real estate business in Abu Dhabi for a long time. Rubel had been abroad for 18 years, and Nasir for 17 years. Rubel has two sons, aged 12 and 1, and a daughter, aged 7. Nasir has an 11-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son.
After the incident, the police have detained the truck and its driver. It is initially believed that the accident occurred because the driver was asleep. Preparations are underway to send the bodies of the deceased to the country after the necessary investigation and formalities, said Moktar Ali.
