Bangladeshi-origin Masud Chowdhury is the Deputy Mayor of Campbelltown City Council

A new chapter in Australia's local government system has been added under the leadership of Bangladeshi-origin leaders. Bangladeshi-origin councillor Masud Chowdhury has been elected deputy mayor of Sydney's Campbelltown City Council.

He was formally elected as deputy mayor for a one-year term in the Campbelltown City Council's council chamber on Tuesday evening, with nine out of 14 council members voting in his favor.

After being elected as Deputy Mayor, Masud Chowdhury expressed his gratitude to the council members and the Bangladeshi community present for supporting him. He said that the responsibility of the Deputy Mayor is not just a matter of position or status; rather, the main goal of this responsibility is to listen to the residents and work for the community.

Masud Chowdhury's achievement is seen as an important example of the growing participation and leadership of the Bangladeshi community in mainstream local government in Australia. A large number of people from the Bangladeshi community were present in the gallery of Campbelltown Council at the time of his election.

Masud Chowdhury has been serving as a councilor on the Campbelltown City Council for a long time. He was re-elected in the 2024 council election.

As Deputy Mayor, he will play an important role in the city's various development activities, services to local people, community initiatives, and the council's decision-making process.
