Soma Sayeed is set to add a new dimension to the progress of the Bangladeshi community in America. Four years after becoming a judge of the Queens Civil Court, she is set to become a judge of the New York State Supreme Court. She has been nominated for this position by the Democratic Party. It is believed that her victory in the upcoming November 4 elections will be assured if the community plays an active role.
On August 7, the Queens County Democratic Party's annual judicial convention unanimously nominated five people to fill five vacant seats on the New York State Supreme Court (Queens Borough Trial Court Bench). Party President and Congressman Gregory Meeks announced the nominees. The nominees are Ira Greenberg, Soma Saeed, Sandra Perez, Frances Wang, and Gary Mirett.
Soma Sayeed migrated to the United States from Tangail with her parents at the age of 12. Her father, Aftab Sayeed, was a judicial magistrate. After completing her education at school and college in New York, she was elected a judge in the Queens County Civil Court in 2021 through her own talent and hard work. In this, she made history as the first Bangladeshi-American and the first Muslim female judge in New York State.
