The death of the uncompromising leader, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, has cast a shadow of grief among the American diaspora, including in New York. Apart from BNP, a large section of the diaspora prayed at various mosques for the forgiveness of Khaleda Zia's departed soul.
BNP leaders in the US have commented that the death of Begum Khaleda Zia has created a major void in Bangladesh's good governance and political arena.
In separate statements, former president and one of the current BNP central committee members Abdul Latif Samrat, mainstream politician and another member of the BNP central committee Gias Ahmed, founder-president of Tarique Rahman Liberation Movement and Return to Home International Committee and one of the joint secretaries of the US BNP, Akhtar Hossain Badal, member of the BNP Chairperson's Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee Golam Faruk Shaheen, central leader of Jubo Dal MA Batin, New York State BNP president Maulana Atiqur Rahman, senior vice president Jasimuddin, secretary Saidur Rahman Sayeed, BNP leader Dinaj Khan, former president and businessman of the US Jubo Dal Zakir H Chowdhury, central leader of Jubo Dal Abu Sayeed Ahmed, US Chhatra Dal president Mazharul Islam Joni and all said that Begum Khaleda Zia's uncompromising attitude in the long movement to restore democracy in Bangladesh will be written in golden letters in history. They all sought the prayers of the diaspora for the forgiveness of Begum Zia's soul.
